Rise Broadband - Acceptable Small Business Service
We are in RURAL Texas, about 60 miles from the nearest major city. It was satellite, dial=up or Rise.
Most techs that have come out have been competent. I am by trade a radio frequency engineer, so I know competence in the field. These are not Direct TV installers. These guys actually know a little bit about computers, networking, and radio frequency technology.
When the antenna is properly aligned by a competent and caring tech, signal dropout is almost zero. We are 5 miles away from the tower and have clear line-of-sight to the tower. We only have dropout on horrible weather days (think tornado with hail).
Our average speed is 5-6MBps. Lowest is about 1.5 of heavy traffic days.
Service cost is relatively equal to similar business class cable services.
Now the bad -
Not ALL of their techs are highly trained or motivated - but I expect that from all companies. It took 3 trips to get someone that actually understood what I was doing, and what it took to get signal at my location. That said - once they understood, every tech they sent out since had no problem establishing a link.
Their tower is a wee bit overloaded in my area, to the point that all the techs complain about it, not knowing whether they will ever establish a signal from it. Never had a problem though, as I'm only about 5 miles from the tower and have clear line-of-sight.
I do wish the speed was faster, but heck - what else am I going to do, get Hughes?
